Stepping back to life: Reiki Surry Hills is open again

What a strange, long period. Being closed for reiki for over four months is the longest period since 2016, when I was in Paris for three months. I missed it. I missed the regular, daily experience of being in the healing space of reiki and being with you, my clients. I did try to keep up with my meditation and chanting, and I did a handful of remote reiki treatments (which I’ll blog about sometime), but I admit it wasn’t very regular. I also decided that I wouldn’t blog or promote Reiki Surry Hills while shut down. I personally dislike when I see something advertised that I can’t get! So, this is the first blog post in over four months. I’ll try to do a newsletter

I’ve been open now since Monday, 11 October. It’s been a nice, gradual re-entry, where I’ve seen clients quite steadily but it’s not been too busy. I’ve asked all my clients to read the COVID-safe guidelines before coming, and that’s worked fine. Two clients so far were reminded by them that we’re not allowed to receive clients who have not been double-vaccinated, and had to cancel their appointments. It looks like Sydney will be freer for those without vaccinations in about a month from now, according to the news.

I’ve been impressed by friends and clients alike at how everyone has managed with being locked down for this long period. In general, people have used the opportunity to discover the good things from a quieter and slower life, and in terms of inconveniences and problems, have managed to deal with them to the best of their capabilities. I think people are being honest in recognising what stress they’ve had to be under, and are generally being kind to themselves, and just getting on with life. I think this period now is an interesting one as we re-enter into the world to see what we’ve learned and how the world’s changed and how we can continue to take care of ourselves as much as we can.

Discover the gifts and benefits of a session of Japanese reiki therapy, healing energy from an experienced practitioner. Visit my website or Facebook page for more information and SMS, email, call me or book online if you’d like to make an appointment. Since 2011, I’ve given more than 2,000 reiki treatments.
Clients come to relieve stress, anxiety and for many other issues, or to just give reiki a try to see what it does for them. Folks come from all over Sydney and elsewhere to see me. While it’s easiest to get to me from the CBD, Darlinghurst, Paddington, Kings Cross, Redfern and Potts Point, I’m pretty easy to get to from anywhere in Sydney.

Seven reviews from Google and Facebook

I feel as happy as Jim Carrey looks in this poster, and thankful to so many of my clients who have agreed to leave reviews about their experiences. It makes me feel good about my work to see how a treatment helps a client, and the reviews definitely help bring people to Reiki Surry Hills. Here are the latest from my Google listing and Facebook page. Thanks to those who wrote them!

Ever since my appointment I’ve felt a shift inside me, for the first time in a while I’ve been able to rest peacefully and not wake up with anxiety. I believe having reiki allowed me to release some blockages that were holding me back that was constantly draining me. I feel a sense of relief, and have been able to focus my mind on other things rather than being stopped because of my anxiety. Since reiki I’ve felt like I’ve taken a next step somewhere into my life. I’m really happy with the results and will definitely be back while I’m in Sydney.

Excellent service. Once you get there, you feel immediately relaxed. Andy takes the time to sit with you, have a little chat with a cup of tea to discuss about the reason of your appointment. The treatment is relaxing, and it really helped me to get a better sleep and start to think differently about my anxiety issues. Also, the follow up after the treatment is highly appreciated. Andy really listens to you. I recommend!

First ever experience of Reiki was with Andy at the end of December. I had experienced trauma recently and a friend suggested I try Reiki. Having asked Andy some pertinent questions – to which I received prompt and informative replies – I booked a session. From the moment I arrived, I felt ‘at home’, relaxed, welcomed and treated in a most professional manner. Andy took the time to listen to me, to my needs – over a cup of tea – and to ensure I was relaxed and had no further questions or no anxiety about the treatment. I was able to relax and enjoy the experience and the what can only be described as healing. The gentleness of the Reiki touch was soothing and calming. Afterwards, Andy again took time to sit with me and discuss the experience and to listen to my questions. The follow-up email with advice and care was most appreciated. I can highly recommend Andy as a Reiki practitioner, a good person, and I intend to experience further healing as needed. Thank you. Ken

Peace, calm and connection to my mind’s eye! After one treatment with Andy, I had a sense of deep solace. Andy’s treatment space is a sanctuary that allows energy to freely flow. While you cannot put a price on peace, making an appointment with Reiki Surry Hills is a great investment in yourself. Thank you for the soothing herbal tea as well.

Calming and soothing – session was Andy was my first Reiki session ever, and I am very happy that I chose Andy. The whole experience was excellent, starting from communication with Andy prior to the session (prompt responses, clear answers and precise instructions on how to find the place) and the treatment itself was very calming and releasing. I would highly recommend Andy and his practice. On the side note, place is beautiful and the whole environment is soothing!

The entire experience was healing in some way – whether it was the space, the music, the chat with Andy before the treatment (where he explained everything and how it would relate to me thoroughly), the treatment itself, or the follow-up emails after. I felt incredibly comfortable from the get-go and would definitely like to return to delve further into this magic.

I like sharing my reviews. It makes me feel good about my work to see how a treatment helps a client, and the reviews definitely help bring people to Reiki Surry Hills. Also, because they’re real, you can feel that there are authentic voices here and they are different from each other. I noticed in reviews of another healer in Surry Hills that they all sound like they were written by the same person, which means they probably were!

Some interesting treatments

This photo was taken from the inside of a car wash! It’s not a bad analogy; a reiki treatment can feel like a really good clean!

I’ve given some interesting treatments lately. I thought it might be interesting for you to read some of my observations. I’m going to use a genderless pronoun, just to make sure I keep the confidentiality of my clients:

🌟 Cynics find it hard to believe but reiki practitioners see reiki energy as travelling across time and space in ways that don’t always match up to our usual experience. Many of my clients say after a treatment that it felt either like it lasted forever and went for a long time, or in contrary, that it felt like only five minutes had gone by. I had a client lately who hadn’t been for five years. They described that after the last treatment, they felt tingling in their hands and feet during the treatment and afterwards for a few days … and they started feeling the same tingling on the morning BEFORE they came for the treatment. That made me think about how reiki ‘time’ doesn’t necessarily match up to our usual sense of time.

🌟 Just at the moment of starting a treatment, a client asked if I could do the treatment without touching them. Almost always, I use touch as part of my treatments, because for most people, touch feels good, and it provides a focus for the energy for both me and the client. Particularly for first-time clients or clients that are more uncertain of what they might feel, feeling my hands, and possibly heat or energy from my hands, can be comforting. But it’s not necessary for me to touch during a treatment. As I said above, the sense of space in reiki doesn’t necessarily correlate to what we’re used to, and a treatment can be just as effective at a distance or without touching. So, I’m really happy that my client felt confident enough to speak up and request what they wanted. The treatment ended up being exactly what they wanted. We were both excited at the end of the treatment at how well it worked, since even though it was their first treatment ever, they immediately felt some of the exact effects and benefits that they’d told me they’d wanted before the treatment. Just as I was starting the treatment, they actually said out loud, ‘I can feel it!’.

🌟 I had another client that came to see what reiki would do for them. We were chatting and they said that they have trouble meditating, and instead just feel anger: anger for not being able to meditate as well as another deeper issue that we didn’t talk about. But after the treatment, the client said that they didn’t feel anything from it, except the same anger they feel when trying to meditate. I’m sorry that the treatment didn’t bring them more benefits and I also have to admit that I don’t really know what’s going on here. I would estimate that 95% or more of my clients tell me they feel something, from subtle to dramatic. So for the very few that feel nothing, I’m not sure why. Maybe their minds are so powerful and filled with thoughts that it blocks them from being able to be open to and tune into the healing energy of reiki. But I’m not sure.

🌟 Sometimes I wonder if it is relates to expectations. One client, at the end of their treatment, said they felt average, about the same. But when I probed, they said they had felt a strong wave of energy, or a few times, all the way through their body. What they meant is that in comparison to the first wave of energy, they felt the same. It seemed like after the first sensations, they were upset that the sensation didn’t continue in the same way. And then, when I asked more questions, they did describe feeling relaxed and tingling in their hands and feet. It seemed that in this case the client could easily have just believed that they didn’t experience anything from reiki, because they are not used to observing what they feel in their body and immediately starting thinking about other things or having doubts.

🌟 I should end this post on a positive note! While many clients ask me what they should expect to feel or are ‘supposed’ to feel, everyone has very different experiences of reiki treatments. Some clients feel that most treatments are about the same for them each time while others feel that each treatment is different. Quite a few clients are reporting feeling really tired after the treatment (but better when that feeling passes) and most clients have been telling me they found the treatments enjoyable, and they feel lighter or more relaxed than when they came in. But it’s good to not have expectations and to be open to whatever happens. See you at your next treatment!

Getting lost

Once, during a time I was lucky enough to live in Paris, someone asked me my favourite thing to do in the city. ‘Get lost,’ I replied. I hadn’t thought of that before; the answer just came out. And it was true. When I was exploring, I didn’t have a schedule or appointments. Wandering down a small street, on purpose or by accident, and ending up not quite sure where I was: it was a great way to see the city. It filled me with wonder and delight.

On the other hand, when you do have a schedule or an appointment, getting lost is not so great. Reiki Surry Hills can be tricky to find. Surry Hills is filled with small streets and alleys. The entrance to our apartment building is on a different street to the address. The closest intersection to the entry is at Little Riley Street and Mackey Street. But Little Riley Street has two parts, the one near me, and another section that begins on the other side of Albion Street, after being interrupted by Frog Hollow Park. Mackey Street, which looks more like an alley to me, is also in two parts, interrupted by a block. If you’re on the wrong part of it, you have to walk around the block to get to the right part!

Clients will know that’s why I give detailed instructions by text for how to find me.

But even then, it doesn’t work for some clients. The majority of these who are lost don’t use Google Maps, or they use it to find the general area, and then stop using it before actually finding me. Some clients tell me that Google Maps doesn’t work and delivers them to the wrong place. A few people have had their phones run out of battery, or are almost about to, which can be a bigger problem if they can’t call me to tell me they’re lost! And a fair number of lost clients don’t actually read the instructions carefully: they read one part and not the other.

The majority of my lost clients don’t make it easier for themselves by calling me when they’re lost. Some wander around for a while before I call them to see where they are, and even manage to get themselves quite upset from being lost.

This makes me wonder. Most of my clients come because of stress and anxiety. But doesn’t always being lost cause stress and anxiety? I also imagine that some of these clients, in their daily lives, constantly encounter bad energy from other people but not know why, though the reason is because they’re late for an appointment or have inconvenienced someone else or haven’t followed instructions or a request. It’s hard to live with your head in the clouds.

So, while I recommend getting lost if you have the time for it, most of the time I would recommend not being lost. Taking the time to pay attention to where you are, and the directions that people give you, could eliminate stress and getting bad reactions from other people. If you need help finding somewhere, ask for help! People like to help others find their way. I do! And in the long run, being mindful and paying attention could certainly help you as much as a reiki treatment could.

From being mildly skeptic about reiki in general, I’m happy to report that it was a fantastic experience with Andy. He has a very unassuming and approachable way about him. Not pushy at all, which is really appreciated in the scenario. After the session I felt immediately lighter, and three weeks on I’m still feeling calmer and more at ease than I’ve felt in years. I am likely to go back myself as needed, and also recommend him to friends.

Max Richter’s Sleep

I’ve been familiar with Max Richter’s music for a while. He’s a German-born British composer and musician, and he seems to be classified as ‘contemporary classical’. His work appears in quite a few soundtracks, and I think I first became aware of him from his “On the Nature of Daylight” which was used in the movie “Arrival”. It’s a stunning piece: so emotional and beautiful.

One of my reiki clients was going to see a documentary after her treatment, and it happened to be Max Richter’s Sleep, a documentary about his 8.5 hour composition, played in a number of locations around the world, including at the Sydney Opera House, which we missed!

It really is an interesting idea: an antidote, he says, to the fast-pace of modern life, and I would add to short attention spans. He invites the audience to gather and … sleep during the performance. Or watch, or do yoga or get up and wander around but the option is there for the audience to curl up, in a communal space, on cots or temporary bedding and drift in and out of sleep and attention.

It’s a fascinating idea really and I think quite a magnificent experiment. He researched sleep and tried to mimic in his music the tones and rhythms of how we sleep, introducing the sound wavelengths of being awake close to the end.

I find it perfect music for reiki: it’s quiet and soothing, beautiful and never jarring with a sudden loud part or change of pace. That’s what I look for in the music I play during my treatments. So if you come for a reiki treatment in the next period, this may be the music that I’ll be playing! And if you’re interested, you should check out the music in any case: it’s easily found on Spotify and elsewhere.

Farewell, my reiki cat

I don’t know if Thor knew, in the last weeks of his too-short life, that he would die soon, because he really was especially affectionate and friendly with my reiki clients. Freyja, his sister, who thankfully is distracting us from our grief, will only sometimes say hello to clients (particularly if it’s close to dinner time) but she’s very coquettish and cat-like: to pet her you really have to offer her your hand in a gentle way, and then wait for her to decide you can touch her.

But Thor! He would often sit, right in the centre of the reiki table, or else on the couch, where a client is supposed to sit, especially on sunny days, but lots of other times as well. It sometimes seemed like it was his favourite place in the apartment. He would often leap from the reiki table to sit next to a client, and then nuzzle up to them and say hello.

While he seemed to be especially attentive to cat-lovers and lovers of animals in general, he would also say hello to those who were not quite as convinced. He was really a wonderful bonus part of a reiki treatment: for clients who were new to Reiki Surry Hills and to reiki, he provided a lovely, disarming burst of cuteness, and then sprawling down in relaxation showed us a model of how to be in the world: relaxed, chilled out and in the moment. I let him stay in the room most times, and I think he only jumped on clients during treatments three times in all! Very few clients were allergic to cats though the first one who was badly allergic (he became so congested that he couldn’t really relax and enjoy his treatment) led me to try to warn clients on my website that we have cats. But this had the unexpected benefit of attracting some cat lovers who would hope to meet Thor during their treatment.

I was also surprised to see cat-phobia in action, as it was hard for me to believe that someone could be scared of that cute face, but I’ve had at least two clients who really were scared of the cats and couldn’t bear the sight of them. It was fun to hear from clients who had had a Russian Blue or knew them through their friends or family. They really are a special breed. One story that I remember vividly was a client who seemed very attached to a story of her being sick with a mysterious ailment. As she was leaving her treatment, her body was hunched over as if she was too exhausted and in pain to get to the door. But then she saw Thor and seemed to forget she was sick, her whole energy changed as she leaned down to pat him. But then she remembered she was sick so adjusted her body back to the way it was. But Thor showed me the truth.

Many of my reiki clients got to meet Thor, and many fell for his charms, so I’m sorry to let my clients know that a few weeks ago, he laid down and died in our apartment, not even six years old, and we don’t know why. But even in those moments of grief, I was hearing lessons clearly from my reiki practice. Just for today. Be grateful. Do not anger. Do not worry. Be compassionate. We’re sad, of course, but so grateful to have enjoyed his wonderful presence and personality and energy. I’m surprised and also so grateful the way he became a part of Reiki Surry Hills, and also surprised to discover how much I fell in love with him. Farewell, my reiki cat. Thank you for everything.

A reiki treatment is sharing

I find it interesting explaining reiki to clients. Some clients have done their own research already (or have had treatments in the past). Some clients don’t really care to know exactly what reiki is: they are just open to trying it and finding out through experience what it means to them. Some clients hear about it from others.

I think the majority of my clients get their ideas of what reiki is by comparing it to other practices or what they’ve heard. So, because some practitioners combine reiki with massage, some call up for reiki massages. Some practitioners use crystals so I’m asked whether reiki is about crystals. And lots of clients (as I’ve written in other blogs) hope for some sort of clairvoyant ability to diagnose a problem and tell them something interesting or what they hope will be useful about them.

I try to gauge the interest of a client and I usually describe a reiki treatment as tapping into and looking for the same healing energy and space that we find in meditation, yoga and other practices, and when the brain is operating at that frequency, it feels good. It heals. In the quiet, present moment, it is different from worrying about the future or past. And the way the mind is connected with the body, clients often (but not always) feel energy and effects throughout their body, as well as usually feeling a deep sense of relaxation.

Bronwen Logan from the International House of Reiki recently wrote a blog post about how she describes reiki to clients: as ‘sharing’. I’d encourage you to read the whole post, since it’s really great and a nice perspective on what a reiki treatment is.

What I’d highlight are her words here:

In non-Reiki terms, you can also see that when we give a gift, for example, we also receive happy endorphins that support our wellbeing. At the same time the other person receives the gift, and they also give their thanks with their endorphins flying high too. So, giving and receiving exist in this same space, they share the space together with neither one dominating or standing out, just being. If you see it this way, then there is neither giving nor receiving, just sharing. And in the sharing space we can let go and just be together without fear or judgement or worry; a true healing space.

It’s such a beautiful, simple description, and I’m not sure all my clients will accept that reiki is or can be as simple as this. Some will hope there is a greater level of expertise or technicality. That I am doing something instead of just trying to be. But if you can accept the simplicity of the concept, that a reiki treatment is a shared experience between client and practitioner, and that simply being in a quiet, present place is healing, I think it is profound.

It also reminds me of another description I read, from a practitioner who was asked what she is doing to a client during a treatment. She said (I’m paraphrasing here, as I don’t remember the exact words) that she was not doing anything but simply loving her client, being there to love.

Chakra Con? I feel for you but do you really know what chakras are?

You have to be a certain age to understand the joke I made in the title of this blog post. When I was a teenager, Chaka Khan’s most famous song “I feel for you” was released and while I usually didn’t love pop music that sounded like hers, I did like this song. I couldn’t deny how catchy it was, and that she was all kinds of fabulous. But really, she has little to do with this blog post except that her name can be contorted into today’s question. Is the idea of a system of chakras a con?

You see, it’s one of the most common questions that I get as a reiki practitioner. You work with chakras, right? That’s what reiki is, isn’t it? It’s also one of the most common issues that clients come for. They tell me that they feel their chakras are blocked or unbalanced. If I ask them how they know this, they have often been told this by a clairvoyant or psychic, or by a friend or stranger, or they have looked it up themselves on the internet, and their symptoms (lack of energy, not feeling great, romantic problems, not feeling fulfilled) match up to a website that says that the reason may be because their is a blockage at a chakra: at the throat or heart, the third eye, or head, the navel or root.

Someone on one of my reiki Facebook groups posted a link to an article about chakras, written by Christopher Wallis, a scholar and researcher who looks into meditation, yoga, tantra and other practices. The Real Story on the Chakras is honestly not an easy read, as it goes into careful and detailed descriptions of the six most important things that you never knew about the chakras.

But I think this is part of the point. How did a system about the subtle body and energy centres from 1000 CE or earlier from Tantrik Yoga get translated to what is understood or believed today?

If you are interested, I do encourage you to read the article yourself, but some of the things that I found particularly interesting are:

  • While most Western sources use a system of seven chakras, there were in fact many systems of chakras, using 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 21 or other counts.
  • While many present the chakra system as an ancient one, the way they are described in the West comes from a more modern time.
  • Rather than the chakras being descriptive (“your root chakra is at the base of your spine and is red”), chakras were envisioned as a focal point for achieving a goal, to meditate on or to visualise something at that place.
  • Most of the way that the West understands chakras seem to come from a 1987 book, Anodea Judith’s Wheels of Life, in which she assigns an association with each chakra to “a certain bodily gland, certain bodily malfunctions, certain foods, a certain metal, a mineral, an herb, a planet, a path of yoga, a suit of the tarot, a sephira of Jewish mysticism, and an archangel of Christianity!”. Others associate each chakra with different crystals, colours, emotions and essential oils. These seem like modern inventions. Now, it may be that there is some truth to these associations. Or they may be completely made up! You might have heard about a writer named Louise Hay who became very popular for her self-affirmations. Her ideas were very widespread that diseases came from bad emotions or attitudes (which meant that you could be at fault for being sick, for not being positive enough). I was shocked to read a number of years ago that she basically made up all of these theories herself, which have no scientific evidence. But, like the ideas of chakras, her ideas are widely believed and popular.

I’m not saying that in order to believe something is true, you need to research it and understand it completely. In fact, that would really be shooting myself in the foot, as I don’t think clients need to know everything or a lot about reiki in order for it to be beneficial for them. But I do think that if you have taken on a set of ideas, like chakras, and you are applying them to your own sense of self and well-being, then you might want to look into where those ideas come from, and whether they really ring true for you or not.

I don’t think it’s useful for clients to believe reiki is about the chakras, nor for clients to believe that they have chakras aligned with their energetic bodies that are “blocked” or “out of balance”. As I’ve said in another blog post, I don’t think your energy is blocked.

I do think that most people can benefit from reiki, and the best way to come to a treatment is with an open mind, without set ideas about what it is, or self-diagnoses of your energetic problems. My aim is for the treatment to bring you what you need at this place and time.

Visit my website or Facebook page for more information and SMS, email, call me or book online if you’d like to make an appointment. Since 2011, I’ve given over 1,800 reiki treatments.
Clients come to relieve stress, anxiety and for many other issues, or to just give reiki a try to see what it brings them. Folks visit from all over Sydney and elsewhere to see me. While it’s easiest to get to me from the CBD, Darlinghurst, Paddington, Kings Cross, Redfern and Potts Point, I’m pretty easy to get to from anywhere in Sydney.
