Falling out of practice

I fell out of practice of doing regular blogs and articles.

I was doing so well for a while!

However, it really did make me question one of my assumptions. I think I saw a few times that when I posted blogs that I was getting clients booking in for treatments. I had also heard that blogging is a basic building block for a social media presence and website. It keeps your website alive with new material, and so it’s supposed to help with your page rankings (basically how high up you’re found on a google search).

The thing is: I didn’t put up a blog post for about six weeks, and yet during this period, I had one of my busiest months ever (matching my record of 51 treatments during a month).

So, I think it’s a good thing to challenge my assumptions and beliefs, and it can be good to get out of practice.

Now, I think there are some things which we will have learned, over time, really are good for our well-being when they are done regularly, and it’s not really good to stray from the practice. For you, this could include eating well, getting enough sleep, exercising, meditating and getting regular reiki treatments!

But there may be other routines which we could alter, or take a break from, or drop all together. My family loves vitamins, so I’ve been a pill taker for years: Vitamin C and fish oil, vitamin D and multi-vitamins. And more, on and off. But I’ve seen so many articles that say there just isn’t evidence of any real health benefits of taking vitamin D and fish oil regularly, so after a few years of taking these daily, I’m going to stop!

I also used a fitness tracker daily, and while I found it interesting to know how many steps I walked, I’m not sure in the long run whether it’s encouraged me to walk more. Plus: the latest studies say we need to get our heart rate up, and not just walk. And I miss wearing my colourful watches. So, for now, I’m going to give that routine up (after I think three years!)

I could go on. I don’t know why exactly, but it feels like a time in my life for changing and challenging my routines. By doing so, if I find that there is something that I should NOT be giving up, or doing more regularly, I can set my intention to do that.

How about you? What in your life would you like to do more regularly? What are your habits, good or bad, that you would like to take a break from? Are your beliefs about what’s good for you and what’s not true? Are these beliefs helping your overall well-being?

Three of my favourite things: kittens, desserts and great reviews

Two of my favourite things in one photo: a kitten (an adorable Scotch-fold kitten named Bishop) and dessert. And I’ll add another favourite thing in this blog post: lovely reviews from my clients. It’s been a while since I posted any!

Kym updated his review on my Facebook page (he left a lovely one after his first treatment:
I have had 5 sessions with Andy.

My intention was to overcome a block in my path to achieve some personal goals.

Peace, Clarity, Calm and Presence is where I find myself – I could not ask for more.

Reiki is perhaps like a compass – keeping me on track.

Thanks Andy

My session of Reiki with Andy was a gift from my daughter during my travels in Sydney. She has been regularly receiving treatments with him and highly recommended it. It was an incredible experience. The treatment was intense for me but very liberating. It gave me clarity and insights about situations of my life, as well as a feeling of peace and inner calm following the treatment. I am thankful to Andy for his kindness and professionalism. Grateful to have discovered his practise of reiki that I wish to continue in France. Hautement recommandé Andy. Merci de tout cœur pour cette unique expérience avec vous. Bien amicalement Corinne

Lessons I learned from a prickly client

Quite a while ago, I had what I would consider my most prickly client. There were two friends who came together and my communication with them to organise the treatments was a little odd, I remember. They came from work on a weekend, and were late. When I met them at the door, I asked whether one of them was going to go for a walk during the other’s treatment, or if they wanted to stay in the room. They said they wanted to be together.

They kept speaking between themselves in another language, which is fine, though something didn’t feel very good about it to me. They decided which one would go first, let’s call her Sharon, and so I asked my usual questions of how she was feeling and whether she’d had reiki before. She hadn’t but her friend had. When she was on the table and we were about to begin, her friend, let’s call her Bev, pulled out a laptop computer from her bag and opened it up to start to work.

‘No,’ I said. ‘I’m sorry but you can’t work on your computer while I’m giving a treatment.’

‘Don’t you have a waiting room?’ she asked, accusingly.

I was rattled. I offered to get her a chair and she could work in the area outside of the reiki room. It wasn’t ideal as I could still hear her working away and I thought what an odd situation it was. Sharon finished her treatment and said that she could feel something and that it felt good. So, I let them swap places, and Sharon went to sit outside the room.

‘So, Bev. I understand that you’ve had reiki before.’ Her energy was closed up so I was struggling to talk in a relaxed way. ‘If you’ve come back for another treatment, I’m guessing you had a good experience with it?’

‘Well, I haven’t had reiki from YOU yet,’ she replied.

I think it was only five minutes into the treatment, maybe ten, before she said, ‘I feel nothing. Absolutely nothing. The last time I had reiki, I started crying immediately and was very emotional.’

‘Do you want me to continue?

‘No.’

I charged her a discounted rate; I certainly wasn’t going to give up my time for free when I had offered the treatment in the same way as I always had. She continued to talk (about me, I was guessing) to Sharon under her breath and I did finally say: ‘I don’t think you were in the right space to have a treatment. You were working on your computer until only a few minutes before we started.’

‘Maybe you’re right.’

I escorted them out of the apartment as they continued to talk to each other in their own language, and I closed the door, not angry, but confused and drained. I was still annoyed by the thought of it for a long time afterwards.

Now, looking back. I’m grateful. From that time, I learned to be very clear that if someone is to stay in the reiki room during a treatment for someone else, then they will need to be quiet. They can read, or read their iPhone, but certainly not type or work. I put more information on my blog and website that Reiki Surry Hills is located in a private apartment. No, I don’t have a waiting room.

Most importantly, I really try to set the context better for treatments. If a client is new to reiki, I tell them that every treatment can be and feel very different, and sometimes I say that you might not feel much of anything at all, except quiet and relaxed. If a client has had reiki before, I tell them that this treatment might feel very different. I encourage clients to be open to whatever might happen, and not have particular expectations.

It’s also in the back of my mind, though I haven’t had a chance to try it out, that if I feel that someone is coming only as a favour to a friend, or that they don’t really want a treatment, or don’t feel comfortable, to try and catch that and be proactive and say, ‘you don’t have to have a treatment.’ It would be better for the both of us to not even begin.

Another lesson was that while I used to believe that reiki would help anyone, whether they believed in it or not, and whether they could feel anything, I’ve changed my views on that. Some people, or some people at certain times of their life, will not be interested in or open to a treatment and I’d think that if they felt a benefit, they’d ignore or not recognise it, or maybe they really wouldn’t any benefits at all.

These were all useful lessons for me to learn, so it’s good to now say: Thank you, prickly client. You’ll never know the ways that you helped my practice!

The latest reviews

It’s so easy to fall out of the routine of blogging … and I was doing so well!

Ah well. Let me get back into the swing of things by sharing some of my latest reviews with you.

The lovely Katerina on Facebook posted:

I’ve had two healing Reiki sessions with Andy and I have to say these have been lifechanging experiences for me as an empath who usually absorbs everyone’s emotions and loses herself in this overwhelming energetic puzzle … After each session I feel this incredible connection to my higher self, all worries are gone and everything is suddenly clear. It’s all about the balance and care that we need to take of ourselves first, even if we feel drawn to helping others … Reiki has given me my power back in so many ways, just have to learn how to maintain it now … Also I have to say I admire Andy’s personal approach and guidance after each session via email, it gives me more clarity and peace in my current life situation.
Thank you!🙏🌿

And Kym shared his experience:

I had my first appointment with Andy today. I have been exposed to Reiki a little previously. Andy listened intently to what bought me to his Practice – I guess my intention is to really find real Forgiveness – my past tends to Boil up every now and then. The process started and I was quickly taken to a place of calm. Post treatment I feel both Calm and Clarity. I will be back. Thanks Andy.

Some clients posted wonderful reviews on my Google listing, all five-star reviews:

Vanessa S: I had a wonderful powerful reiki session with Andy and highly recommend him. I have done Reiki myself but not for many years and came to Andy asking for a reiki boost and I just felt so great during and after our session.

Kerrie-Anne: I really enjoyed my reiki session and would highly recommend Andy. Lots of my friends have been seeing him for a few years and we all think he’s fantastic.

Oliver: Thank you Andy for the treatments and sharing your knowledge and wisdom on this incredible, transformational practice.

And finally, two reviews on Bookwell that I haven’t posted:

Carl: Andy is top notch at his art, helped click a broken heart back together, highly recommende.

Pearl: Andy is a fantastic practitioner. I managed to reach deep levels of relaxation that meant I could process my thoughts calmly and effectively, so the positive effects have been ongoing. Physically I felt a lot of bodily stresses and strains melt away during the session in a way that is even more relaxing than you get from a massage. I highly recommend you see Andy!

As always, I am so GRATEFUL for my clients to take the time to share their experiences. It makes a huge difference to my practice, as people read these reviews, can feel that they are true and authentic, and get an idea of what they might experience. THANK YOU ALL.

One thousand treatments!

I like counting. As long as you don’t get too obsessed with a number and what it might mean, it’s a useful part of observation to be able to ask: how am I doing?

It’s part of the reason why I send follow-up emails to clients, and gently ask new clients: have you had reiki before? If so, when? If we observe our experiences, we can learn: how did a reiki treatment help me? How did it play out over the days that followed the treatment? How often should I come for a treatment?

I’ve been keeping records for myself since starting to give reiki treatments to clients professionally. It tells me how busy I’ve been and describes the always ebbing and flowing of activity.

This week, I have hit 1,000 reiki treatments! This makes me feel good. It’s a useful figure to mention to my clients, as I know many want the reassurance that I have experience and have seen a lot of people. I also think that with 1,000 treatments, the reiki room has some pretty good energy!

And it does feel significant. I’ve met clients from all over the world and all over Australia, of different backgrounds and ages, doing varied work or studies or neither, and who come for many, many reasons, some of them similar, and at times, for a reason that is completely unique to them. And as I mentioned in my last blog, boy, am I grateful. To have the privilege to be able to give so many treatments and to help many people at times of need, and to introduce them to reiki and their inner fire. It’s been wonderful. Happy 1,000 treatments to me!

Ten reasons that I’m reiki-grateful

I’m grateful that:

  1. I get to help clients and bring them comfort in times that they need it. It feels good to be able to do this.
  2. I get to introduce clients to the energy that is always flowing through us but we don’t take much notice of or have the opportunity to notice our energy, our inner being, our higher self.
  3. Clients trust in me and tell me sometimes some really difficult stuff they’re going through.
  4. I can provide some helpful guidance to some clients, outside of reiki, just because I’ve been around the block a few times.
  5. My reiki practice is so busy and constant that it’s become part of my work, occupation and vocation; I’m not sure I ever envisioned this happening!
  6. As treatments are not me giving or doing a treatment on a client, but creating a space for healing to happen, I get to experience healing, quiet and meditation with every treatment. It’s made an enormous difference in my life.

I’m grateful:

  1. To my teacher, Frans Stiene for guiding me in my practice with grace, skill and humour.
  2. To my brother for introducing me to reiki and sending me on my journey.
  3. To my clients, for coming for treatments and supporting my practice and taking the time to leave reviews and let me know how they’re going after treatments.
  4. To my husband, for letting me use our spare bedroom as the Reiki Room for Reiki Surry Hills (and to share the space for me to run my practice from our apartment)

For all these reasons and more, I’m grateful! Or perhaps that’s reiki-grateful.

Almost famous: Reiki Surry Hills

Here is what I think is a fabulous video from January 2017:

I’ve thought for the last year that they (I won’t mention the name in case they’ve got alerts!) would delete the video but it’s still up so I might as well share it more officially with you.

You see, I got a call before the video, where they said they do neighbourhood guides, and that Reiki Surry Hills would be a nice sort of service or business to fit into it, as it’s a bit different.

So, I had this super-professional and beautiful woman drop by, Rachel Billsborough, with a very excellent camera guy, and they filmed this video (which was later edited).

Afterwards, they asked me to rent it from them for promotional purposes. I can completely see how this would work for some businesses. Videos can apparently be a really effective marketing tool, which gets way more attention than a static image or set of words. I didn’t have to arrange this or script it. It really was amazing to be given the opportunity to use this video to promote Reiki Surry Hills.

The problem though is that I don’t really have such a big business. It’s part-time work, which I fit in with my other professional work, as an editor of reports and documents, and I don’t charge a ton of money (like some places…) for the treatments. Plus, I’m getting as many clients these days as I want. So it didn’t make sense to invest money into using this video to promote my business, when I’m happy with how it’s going, and my Google Business profile, Bookwell appointment system, word-of-mouth, and repeat clients are keeping me as busy as I’d like to be.

Still, it’s a great video, isn’t it?

Welcome to my home!

Clients sometimes expect Reiki Surry Hills to be a clinic or shop. But nope, the reiki room is located within our apartment! While there are certainly offices for physiotherapists and chiropractors, and there are a few clinics that offer a variety of treatments (like massage) that might include reiki, I am not sure whether there are any shops or clinics in Sydney that focus on reiki alone. It’s just not well-known enough in Sydney or Australia, and even then, the costs of renting a storefront or office space would probably cancel out any income (or I’d have to charge a lot more)! And it would also limit the hours of when I can offer treatments.

So, if you come for a treatment, you’ll be welcomed to my home. I think the space is quite nice, and have put effort into making sure that it’s comfortable. I think that with around 950 treatments having taken place in the room, it’s got a good energy too! The other benefit is that you might get to meet my adorable cats, and I can offer flexible hours for treatments (including on the weekends).

The old carpet!

There are a few drawbacks. You might hear noise from the neighbours or the street (although arguably this could happen in a storefront too). My husband works from home, so occasionally you might hear someone else in the apartment (though we try to keep it as quiet as possible during your treatment). There’s no waiting room, so if a client brings someone, they need to be quiet and share the reiki room. Also, if I’m the only person home, and there’s a delivery or another enquiry at the door, I have to interrupt the treatment to get it. I think in all these years of treatments, it’s only happened a few times though. Same if one client arrives quite late and the next client arrives early, I’d have to get the door. But in the few times this has happened, neither client has minded (the first one being interrupted and the second one waiting for a few extra moments until I’m ready to let them in). In any case, I’m glad my clients have been understanding with the fact that Reiki Surry Hills is in a private residence, with its benefits and disadvantages.

The new carpet!

The latest news is that I’ve got a new carpet! The old one was fine and serviceable but had started to fray at the edges. I can’t believe how easy it was to find a new carpet in a colour I like (I’m going with light green, to match the plants and to have the feeling of bringing the outdoors and nature inside) and at a very reasonable price, delivery included. Actually, unless the carpet turns out to be not as nice as I think it is, I’m happy to recommend them: AU Rugs!

End of the year reviews

No, this isn’t a review at the end of the year of the year that came before it. It’s just a few reviews, that I’ve been meaning to post, at the end of the year. I’m going to get in trouble for this word play some day…

In any case, it’s been ages since I’ve posted up some reviews. Which is silly, because it’s such a pleasure to share them. And I think it helps give potential clients (like you?) an idea of the range of outcomes they might have from a treatment.

These are from my online booking site, Bookwell (which you can get to by clicking on the blue button on my front page, or the contact page):

This was my first proper, full reiki session and I had high expectations that it would be effective but didn’t actually know how I would feel within the session or after. I thought that it might actually make me feel worse initially, rather than better, as part of the ‘cleansing’ process (I’ve heard that this can happen). But I was pleasantly surprised, I left feeling about 3kg lighter – physically and emotionally! It was the reset I needed to start my journey to feeling ‘well’ again. I will definitely be back next time i’m in Sydney.

Andy was great, very professional. This was a new experience for me and I could feel the heat radiating off Andy’s hands. It was very surreal! The space is beautiful and I left feeling very calm and relaxed. I would definitely go back.

Reiki was for me an incredible experience. I have been suffering of an IBS for a couple of years and have had stomach issues from a very young age. While modern western medicine did not bring me any help, I started to understand we are energetic beings. My first reiki treatment brought to my awareness that I was repressing and holding on a lot of emotions in my body. I believe Reiki is an incredible help for healing. I am very grateful to Andy and I highly recommend to visit him.

I also received two nice reviews on my Facebook page that I haven’t reposted yet:

Andreea: Andy was amazing! He really listened to my concerns and provided the helping aid that I needed. The treatment was relaxing. I felt much more lighter and was in a better headspace after our session. I had issues with my ear and a muscle spasm on my back. After our session, I was super pleased that my body healed and everything went back to normal again. Definitely going back for another session! 🙌💗

Jess: This is such a special experience! Andy can work magic in many areas of life. Highly recommended 5 stars.

🙏 I’m very grateful to my clients who have taken the time to share their experiences and kind words 🙏🙏🙏

Further adventures of reiki cat

For some reason, Thor was particularly being a reiki cat at the start of December, so I thought I’d give you an update on him.

He’s generally been stretching out in the space where I offer my clients to sit down, sometimes slowly pushing against them so he’s basically taking up the whole area, and clients are perched on the corner of the sofa.

Or he sits on the reiki table, looking at my clients and then doing his classic move of falling over on his side with his belly exposed, so if you’re used to cats, you know he wouldn’t mind a bit of a belly rub.

I can’t believe what a flirt he’s being.

Occasionally, he’s missing in action, but has often been around, and if it’s anywhere from about 2.30pm onwards, he’ll be looking for attention in the lead-up to dinner at 5pm.

It’s uncanny that he seems to know, before a client will come even in the door, whether they are cat people, have cats, or are even dog people but don’t mind cats.

One client, who has three cats, came with her husband, who waited quietly on the sofa during the treatment, and Thor just got up and lay down beside him the whole time. A long time ago, he was going through a bit of an active phase where I didn’t trust him not to jump up on the table during a treatment, so I’d let him say hello and then put him out of the room. Mostly lately, he’s happy to say hello, and then if we can move him from the table to the sofa, he just blisses out. However, a few days ago, a client who has a long-haired cat came in for a treatment and Thor decided that he would obviously be welcome and jumped onto the table just as the treatment started. It was cute but I put him out of the room.

Freyja, Thor’s sister, rarely makes an appearance, though sometimes noses around before dinnertime, and as mentioned, occassonally, she will really decide that someone is OK with cats, and even allows them a quick touch.

I had my first client who was afraid of cats. Phobias are so hard to relate to when you don’t have them yourself. I was looking at the faces of my gentle, curious cats, and thinking: how can you be afraid of them? But she managed to back into the reiki room … I kept the cats away from her, and she had a great treatment (it was her first and she was amazed at how good she felt, right away, afterwards).

I never imagined Thor might be a part of my reiki practice, but if he graces us with his presence, I consider it a pretty good thing. If he’s already dozing, he’s a pretty good model for how to be in this world. With most of my clients coming for stress and anxiety, he’s a good role model for being free of both of them. Plus, he really seems to be bring delight to various clients. A number of clients who are from overseas have had to leave their cats with family members in their home countries, so they love to be able to hang out with a cat … And one or two clients had Russian Blues in their childhood or have known Russian Blues in their time, so it’s especially nice for them to have a visit with Thor.

As in my last post about reiki cat, in May, I try to warn clients on my website if they have allergies to cats to warn me, but I understand that it’s hard to read everything on a website. Yet, I don’t want to make the cat a defining feature of my practice! One of my current clients thinks Thor is beautiful but is allergic, so popped an antihistimine before her treatment and was fine. I had a client a few months ago, who unfortunately, became so congested during the treatment from his allergy to cats that I don’t think he was able to relax into the treatment. If you’re allergic to cats, let me know before you come and I’ll give the room an extra vacuum, wash my hands an extra time, and try to make the place as free of cat fur as possible before your visit.
